Proper hardness of a gear, both in the tooth and in the body is becoming increasingly critical since load carrying capacity is dependent on hardness. The scope of this paper is limited to the most common methods of heat treating steel gearing; however, there are many methods of heat treatment in wide use throughout the industry.
