Microgear Measurement Standards: Comparing Tactile, Optical and Computed Tomography Measurements

Microgears are widely used in industry, as they are essential components of gearboxes used in precision engineering, medical technology, and robotics. This paper discusses the development of a new internal involute microgear measurement standard for research and industry. A comparison between the tactile calibration performed using a micro coordinate measuring machine (µCMM) and the measurement results obtained by means of a computer tomography (CT) system and optical CMM will be presented. The new results, compared with the results of the comparison measurements of the external microgear measurement standard, are discussed. The results and discussion will provide an overview of the state of the art in microgear metrology.
